Pool Acid Wash in Phoenix

Stains, dark spots, or chalky scale that brushing won't remove? An acid wash strips a thin layer of the surface to bring your plaster back to a brighter finish.

What Is a Pool Acid Wash?

An acid wash is a surface treatment done on a drained pool. A diluted acid solution is applied to the plaster, which removes a very thin layer of the surface along with the stains, scale and discoloration sitting on it. The result is a cleaner, brighter-looking pool without replastering.

Because it removes a little bit of plaster each time, an acid wash isn't something to do every year. It's a reset for surfaces that cleaning and chemistry can no longer fix.

When an Acid Wash Makes Sense

Good candidates include pools with algae stains left behind after a green pool cleanup, widespread dark or brown discoloration, chalky white calcium scale on the plaster, or a surface that just looks dull and dingy overall.

It isn't a fix for rough, cracked, or delaminating plaster. If the surface is worn through, replastering is the better option, and we can connect you with our trusted remodeling and plaster partner.

Hard Water and Phoenix Pools

Phoenix's hard water and high evaporation leave calcium and minerals behind on pool surfaces. Over time that builds into scale and staining, especially when pH runs high. Many acid washes we do in the Valley are about removing that mineral buildup and the stains that come with it.

Since the pool needs to be drained for an acid wash, it's often paired with a water change. That gives you fresh, softer water and a cleaner surface at the same time.

Our Acid Wash Process

We drain the pool, rinse the surfaces, and apply the acid solution in sections, scrubbing and rinsing as we go. The acid is then neutralized and the residue removed before the pool is refilled. Once it's full, we balance the fresh water and start up the equipment.

Acid washing involves strong chemicals and should be done with proper safety equipment and handling, which is why it's best left to a professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the pool have to be drained for an acid wash?

Yes. The acid is applied directly to the empty pool's surfaces, so the pool is drained first and refilled after.

How often can a pool be acid washed?

Not often. Each acid wash removes a thin layer of plaster, so it's best saved for when stains or scale can't be removed any other way.

Will an acid wash fix rough or cracked plaster?

No. Worn, rough or cracked plaster usually needs resurfacing. We can refer you to our trusted plaster and remodeling partner.
